Capturing the USWNT Buzz at Media Day
CONTEXT
During the summer of 2023, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the US Women's National Soccer Team (USWNT) media day.
Armed with a DJI Osmo Pocket 3 camera, I captured B-roll footage and conducted table interviews with nine-star athletes. This experience provided valuable insights into the content creation process for major sporting events at a large media company.

CAPTURING THE ACTION
My primary goal was to collect engaging content that could be used to promote the upcoming Women's World Cup across NBCU and Telemundo's digital platforms. This meant capturing high-quality B-roll footage that showcased the energy and excitement surrounding the team. I focused on capturing close-up shots of the athletes, their interactions with each other, and the overall media day atmosphere. For the table interviews, I positioned myself to ensure clear audio and engaging visuals. I aimed to capture soundbites that effectively conveyed the athletes' personalities, thoughts on the upcoming World Cup, and their excitement to compete.
Organization and Delivery
After successfully filming the content, I found a space onsite to organize the footage meticulously. I created designated folders within Dropbox to categorize the B-roll and interview content. This ensured easy access and facilitated a smooth handover. Finally, I transferred all the footage to my manager, ensuring it was readily available for the NBCU Local News and Digital Innovation teams to utilize.
Impact and Learnings
My experience at the USWNT media day provided valuable insights into the content creation process for major sporting events. I learned the importance of capturing high-quality visuals and clear audio for effective storytelling. Additionally, I gained experience in content organization, a crucial aspect of ensuring footage is readily accessible for editing and distribution. This opportunity allowed me to contribute to the broader effort of promoting the Women's World Cup across NBCU and Telemundo's digital platforms. Witnessing the behind-the-scenes work that goes into creating engaging sports content was an invaluable learning experience.
